When and how is coaching available?

Coaching is offered Monday-Friday from 8am-5pm by video chat, phone, or in person. Check out Handshake for a complete list of availability. If you are interested in scheduling an appointment and are not able to find an option that fits your schedule, please email our Information Desk at [email protected] for help.

How do I know which coach to meet with?

Students choose their coaches in all different ways! Feel free to browse our staff directory to see if anyone stands out to you. Many students also just choose a coach based on availability- whatever works best for you!

Who can make an appointment?

Appointments are reserved for current degree-seeking students and recent graduates.

Recent graduates can access appointments for 2 years after their graduation date.

How many appointments can I make?

Due to high demand, each student is limited to one appointment per day. Additionally, a student may only hold up to two scheduled appointments at any given time.

How do I request an accommodation?

We want to ensure full and equitable participation in our appointments. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this one on one appointment, please email [email protected].

What to Expect At Your Appointment

What happens if I need to cancel or if I’m late?

Given demand for student appointments, we ask that you cancel any appointment you cannot attend. See our no-show policy for information about missing scheduled appointments with University Career Center staff. In addition, we are only able to hold two appointments at a time and only one appointment per day to allow fair access to appointments for all students.

Plan to arrive on time for your appointment to maximize your interaction with your career coach. Appointments will be cancelled if you have not arrived by the halfway mark of your appointment.

What do I need to do before my appointment?

It’s a good idea to think through the goals you have for the meeting and write down your questions, but it’s also ok to just come in for a “check up” without knowing what to ask. We’ll take a few minutes at the beginning of the session to get to know you and learn more about your goals.

For resume/cover letter reviews, please upload a copy of your documents to your Handshake appointment (via the comments function) before the meeting. For mock interviews, it’s helpful if you share a job description in advance. Most of the time, your coach will review these items during the session (not before), but it will cut out the time needed at the beginning to figure out how to share documents.

What can I expect at my meeting?

Our coaches are here to support you in your career journey, and we pride ourselves in creating a welcoming space. Expect your coach to take a few minutes to get to know you. They will listen as much as they talk - empowering you to lead your journey! While we are experts in the job search and career exploration and will help you strategize, reflect, and connect to resources, it’s essential that you take the reins. You’ll be the driver in writing your resume, applying for jobs, doing your exploration, etc. Own your journey, and we’ll equip you with the tools and confidence to reach your goals.

If you experience technology issues or if your coach doesn’t log in within 5 minutes of your start time, please call 734-764-7460 or email us at [email protected].

What do I need to know about in-person appointments?

Before you arrive, double-check your confirmation email to make sure it’s an in-person appointment. For undergraduate and master's students, in-person appointments are at the University Career Center (3rd Floor of the Student Activities Building). If driving, give yourself extra time to find parking. When you enter the UCC, you will check in with the Information Desk and they will let your coach know that you are here. For Ph.D. students, please see information below.

What do I need to know about video call appointments?

Video calls happen within the Handshake platform, so you do not need to look for a separate link. Look for confirmation emails or go to your Handshake Appointment Page. You will not be able to click the “join appointment’ button until 5 minutes before your scheduled appointment time.

What do I need to know about phone appointments?
Your coach will call you. Most often the call will be from the Google Meets platform, so you will not recognize the number- still pick up!

Information for International Students

As an international student, you can choose either to meet with our international student career coaches or meet with our other staff. The choice is up to you!

International students often wonder if they can talk about work authorization or other considerations related to employment eligibility during career coaching. You're welcome to share information about your immigration status if it's relevant to your career planning—for example, if you want to explore how to search for opportunities that align with CPT, OPT, or other work authorization options. However, career coaches do not provide advice on immigration policies, visa eligibility, or application processes. For questions like “Am I eligible for CPT?” or “How do I apply for OPT?”, please connect with the International Center, where staff are best equipped to support you. Please know that sharing your status is entirely voluntary—you will never be asked to disclose anything you're not comfortable sharing.
