GSSA, Masters Student Career Development

Hi all! I'm really excited to be working as the Master's Student Career Development Coordinator GSSA! In this role, I'm supporting Rackham's masters student initiative, focusing on career development resources for master's students. As a graduate student myself, I am passionate about helping fellow graduate students have access to adequate resources to plan and prepare for their next steps after graduation.

Previous to this role, I have taught various topics in linguistics to undergraduate students from different academic backgrounds, and designed instructional materials for linguistics and ESL courses. My experience also includes mentoring and training undergraduate students on research projects and coursework, supporting language outreach efforts, and contributing to initiatives that document and promote linguistic diversity.  In addition, I have taken part in organizing conferences with student initiatives and faculty, and facilitated workshops on community engagement for both academic and non-academic audiences.

I am currently a PhD candidate in Linguistics at U of M. My research throughout my graduate studies has delved into how humans conceptualize an event, and how participants of an event are encoded in natural language, working on data from both signed and spoken languages. I'm currently expanding this framework further beyond language by looking at two fundamental categories in human cognition (and in the world) - objects and actions - in silent gesture in comparison to how the fundamental categories of nouns and verbs are encoded in visual grammars for my dissertation research.

Both within and beyond academia, I'm committed to inclusive research practices and knowledge sharing. I prioritize community-driven approaches and aim to ensure that research outcomes are accessible and relevant to the people they represent. With a foundation in both academic research and equitable community outreach practices, I'm passionate about applying linguistic insights to real-world challenges.

Outside of work, I enjoy embroidering, video games, painting, as well as my most recently picked up hobby: learning chess. I also find joy in concerts, comedy shows, and travel whenever I can fit those into my schedule.
