Where to apply

Given the competitiveness of the medical school application process, you must cast a wide enough net and be realistic in your self-assessment as you target schools.  In recent years, UM students and graduates have applied to an average of ~18 MD schools, ~21 MD/PhD programs, and ~8 DO schools.  Applying is a very expensive proposition both in terms of time and money.  Do not apply to any school that you would not feel good attending even if that was the only school where you were able to gain admission.  However, remember that a school that may not look too desirable in June, as you start applying and all your options are still open, may acquire additional appeal in your eyes later in the process if your application efforts do not go as well as you may have hoped.  Unfortunately, there is not such a thing as a "safety school" when it comes to medical school in terms of acceptance probability.  Yet, your chances for admission are going to be stronger at certain schools rather than others based on your residency status, academic profile, fit with the school's mission, etc., so aim for balance.  Unless you have a stellar application profile, it is unwise to target only "reach or dream schools."

Beyond individual medical school websites and conversations with students and alumni/ae of these institutions, here are some factors to consider in your exploration of medical schools to target:

  • Location
  • School Philosophy and Mission
  • Residency Requirements
  • Curriculum, Teaching Methodology, Innovation
  • Rankings/Prestige
  • Cost and Financial Aid
  • Clinical Rotations and Hospital Affiliations
  • Past Record of Admitting UM Graduates
  • Student Support Services
  • Opportunities for Research, Study Abroad, Joint Degrees
  • Class Size
  • Selectivity
  • Student Perceptions
  • Residency Placements

Of course, you can always schedule an appointment with a pre-med counselor in the Career Center to discuss your application strategy.
