What’s your favorite thing to do in a typical day?
I enjoy interacting with my students. It can be frustrating at times, but it’s great to talk to them, and celebrate successes with them.
What’s the least favorite thing you do in a typical day?
Data Entry. It’s a necessary part of the job, but it’s boring!
How did you decide on this field? How did you get hired?
I believe that education is the great equalizer, and that access to quality education is a basic Civil Right. Citizen Schools is the perfect mix of my passions for education, politics, and social justice. I was not ready to jump into a typical classroom setting right after undergrad, so i’m glad to be able to work with education, and still do a little community organizing.
How does your Michigan experience help you in your job?
My Michigan experience was tailor-made to prepare me for a job such as this. The variety of organizations I was involved in prepared me for a career in non-profit management. I always tell student-leaders that the work we do on campus will prepare us for our lives after Michigan, and this has proven very true for me.
What are possible next steps for your career? Is another degree required or recommended?
Next steps include a couple more degrees. I start work on my Master’s in Education this upcoming summer, and after my fellowship with Citizen Schools is up I want to go to law school. I want to use these degrees to continue to work in the non-profit world with an emphasis on education.
What do you wish you had known as an undergraduate preparing for your career?
No answer provided.
