Year Graduated: April 2012
Major at Michigan: Neuroscience, Philosophy
Share the story of why you chose your major?
We are delving into an age of computers and artificial intelligence, yet we are still unable to answer fundamental questions about how our own brains function. It is these fascinating, unsettled questions that motivated me to declare a neuroscience major. As I pursued neuroscience research, my interests broadened to wanting to understand the social context of science and the questions that arise at the intersection of science and society, such as bioethical concerns. This propelled me to declare my philosophy major.
At Michigan, I spent most of my time outside the classroom…
immersing myself in the arts and culture on campus and the larger Ann Arbor community. From the great artists that perform at the Ark, Blind Pig, and Hill Auditorium to the outstanding musical and dance performances hosted by student groups, there was never a moment when I was at a loss for things to do (even while on a tight budget!).
What story stands out to you in your first year on the job?
My freshman year, my organic chemistry professor told the class that it would not be rote memorization of reactions and other facts that would be important later in life but the ability to think- the ability to solve new problems and quickly learn new skills. Reflecting back on this today while working in a fast-paced and rapidly changing environment, what she said could not have been more true.
What’s next in your story? (next steps, future plans)
I will be starting medical school in the fall.
What is one thing every student should have on their “career to-do” list?
