You can establish your reference letter file with The University Career Center’s Reference Letter Service by completing a few simple steps online. The $25 opening fee ensures your file will remain active  through June 30, 2018. In addition, there will be charges each time you request to have letters sent to prospective employers or graduate and professional schools.

To open a file, you will need to complete:

(1) The RLS Policies Agreement, which verifies your understanding of and commitment to follow the policies and procedures of the RLS, and

(2) The Reference File Registration Form, which is sent along with your reference letters each time you submit a request, and may be updated anytime.

After you complete your online request to open a file, you will receive a confirmation message.  Please allow 1-2 business days for internal processing.  Once your file is activated, you will be able to start utilizing your file.  Please report any errors promptly to the RLS by calling 734/764-7459 or sending an e-mail to rlservice@umich.edu.

Drop off or mail to the RLS office the Reference File Registration Form and the Reference Letter Service Policies Agreement.

Through June 30, 2018, you will be able to update your contact information, education or work history online or by submitting (drop off in person, mail or fax) an updated Reference File Registration Form.

Existing files approaching expiration may be renewed for a $25 fee.  Renewal guarantees a file's active status only through June 30, 2018.  Files that are not renewed will be considered inactive and subsequently destroyed. File deactivation affects only reference letters. Transcripts and other academic records at the University will not be affected in any way by the RLS deactivation.
