Getting Started

The field of finance/banking is highly competitive and employers expect you to demonstrate an on-going interest in the field long before you start any interview process!  Here are some strategies for getting started:

Get informed!
Keep up-to-date with the latest trends, industry events and current issues by reading the Wall Street Journal and watching financial news channels daily.

Develop your Excel skills
Advanced Excel skills are necessary for most finance careers.  Look for courses (academic or enrichment) that will develop your Excel skills beyond the basics.

Explore investing
Investment banking recruiters expect you to be comfortable with the concepts of investing.  Gain exposure to investment theories/practices through courses, student groups and competitions.

Experience a “day in the life”
Many organizations host career days, live chats and/or career simulations.  Review the “careers” page of the organization website for more information on careers and resources for connecting with staff.  The Career Center’s Immersion Excursions are another opportunity to experience a “day in the life”
