Allopathic Statistics (MD)

According to the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC), 852 students and alumni/ae--whose bachelor degree came from University of Michigan--applied to allopathic medical school in 2012-2013. Of these, 460 (or 54%) were accepted and 432 matriculated that year. Of this cohort, 234 were reapplicants: 118 (or 50%) were accepted and 111 actually matriculated.  For comparative purposes, in the same year, 46,454 individuals applied to allopathic medical schools nationally, while 20,519 (44%) were accepted and 19,525 matriculated.

UM students and alumni/ae who were accepted to one or more medical schools had on average a 3.63 undergraduate cumulative GPA and 3.55 undergraduate science GPA; and average MCAT scores of 9.4 in Verbal, 10.6 in Physical Sciences, 10.7 in Biological Sciences (Total: 30.7).  In 2013, 45 UM graduates matriculated in the first year class at University of Michigan Medical School.

Of the 37 UM students and alumni/ae who applied to MD/PhD programs in the same year and agreed to release their data, 27 (or 73%) were accepted by at least one school, and all 27 decided to matriculate. These accepted applicants had on average a 3.74 undergraduate cumulative GPA, a 3.69 undergraduate science GPA; average MCAT scores of 10.7 in Verbal,12.7 in Physical Sciences, and 12.3 in Biological Science (Total:  35.7).

The summary matrices below are for all University of Michigan seniors and alumni/ae—applying to allopathic medical school for entry in 2013—who released their information to their pre-medical advisor/counselor via the AAMC. Osteopathic Statistics (DO)

According to the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM), in 2012-2013, 305 seniors and alumni/ae from University of Michigan applied to osteopathic medical schools (vs. 16,707 nationally) and 99 matriculated (vs.5,874 nationally).  However, from the UM graduates who released their information, we know that there were at least 162acceptances.  Thus, in 2013, the matriculation rate of UM graduates into osteopathic medical schools was 32.4% (vs. 35.1% nationally). UM graduates who matriculated into an osteopathic medical school had an average cumulative GPA of 3.4 (vs. 3.5 nationally) and an average total MCAT of 28.7 (vs. 27 nationally).  (Source: AACOM, 2013)
