Allopathic Statistics (MD)

According to the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC), 811 students and alumni/ae from University of Michigan applied to allopathic medical school in 2011-2012. Of these, 446 (or 55%) were accepted and 420 matriculated that year. Of this cohort, 229 were reapplicants: 117 (or 51%) were accepted and 112 actually matriculated.  For comparative purposes, in the same year, 42,548 individuals applied to allopathic medical schools nationally, while 19,735 (45.3%) were accepted and 18,015 matriculated.

UM students and alumni/ae who were accepted to one or more medical schools had on average a 3.63 undergraduate cumulative GPA and 3.55 undergraduate science GPA; and average MCAT scores of 9.4 in Verbal, 10.8 in Physical Sciences, 11 in Biological Sciences and P in the Writing Sample (Total: 31.2 P).  In 2012, 67 UM graduates matriculated in the first year class at University of Michigan Medical School.

Of the 32 UM students and alumni/ae who applied to MD/PhD programs in the same year and agreed to release their data, 20 were accepted by at least one school, and 19 decided to matriculate. These accepted applicants had on average a 3.68 undergraduate cumulative GPA, a 3.61 undergraduate science GPA; average MCAT scores of 10 in Verbal, 12.15 in Physical Sciences, and 11.8 in Biological Science (Total:  33.95).

The summary matrices below are for all University of Michigan seniors and alumni/ae—applying to allopathic medical school for entry in 2012—who released their information to their pre-medical advisor/counselor via the AAMC. Osteopathic Statistics (DO)

According to the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM), in 2011-2012, 284 seniors and alumni/ae from University of Michigan applied to osteopathic medical schools (vs. 15,172 nationally) and 88 matriculated (vs. 5,221 nationally).  However, from the UM graduates who released their information, we know that there were at least 158 acceptances.  Thus, in 2012, the matriculation rate of UM graduates into osteopathic medical schools was 31% (vs. 34% nationally). UM graduates who matriculated into an osteopathic medical school had an average cumulative GPA of 3.36 (vs. 3.50 nationally) and an average total MCAT of 28.84 (vs. 26.99 nationally).
