Allopathic Statistics (MD)

According to the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC), 774 students and alumni/ae from University of Michigan applied to allopathic medical school in 2010-2011. Of these, 425 (or 54.9%) were accepted and 405 matriculated that year. Of this cohort, 185 were reapplicants: 92 (or 49.7%) were accepted and 89 actually matriculated. For comparative purposes, in the same year, 42,423 individuals applied to allopathic medical schools nationally, while 19,585 (46.2%) were accepted and 18,678 matriculated.

UM students and alumni/ae who were accepted to one or more medical schools had on average a 3.63 undergraduate cumulative GPA and 3.55 undergraduate science GPA; and average MCAT scores of 9.5 in Verbal, 10.5 in Physical Sciences, 10.9 in Biological Sciences and P in the Writing Sample (Total: 30.9 P). In 2011, 46 UM graduates matriculated in the first year class at University of Michigan Medical School alone!

Of the 31 UM students and alumni/ae who applied to MD/PhD programs in the same year and agreed to release their data, 22 were accepted by at least one school, and all 22 decided to matriculate. These individuals had on average a 3.76 undergraduate cumulative GPA, a 3.71 undergraduate science GPA; average MCAT scores of 10.95 in Verbal, 12.36 in Physical Sciences, and 12.6 in Biological Science.

Osteopathic Statistics (DO)

Also, according to the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM), in 2010-2011, 240 seniors and alumni/ae from University of Michigan applied to osteopathic medical schools (vs. 14,304 nationally) and 77 matriculated (vs. 5,098 nationally). [However, from the 208 UM graduates who released their information, we know that there were at least 177 acceptances.] Thus, in 2011, the matriculation rate of UM graduates into osteopathic medical schools was 32% (vs. 35.6% nationally). UM graduates who matriculated into an osteopathic medical school had an average cumulative GPA of 3.38 (vs. 3.48 nationally) and an average total MCAT of 27.71 (vs. 26.66 nationally).
