Renewing Your Reference Letter File

Regular file longevity is five years.  For example, if a file was opened on May 1, 2007, it must be renewed by May 1, 2012 to remain active. A file may be renewed for an additional five years for a  $25 fee.  After five years from the opening date, files that are not renewed will be considered inactive. Inactive files will be deactivated and subsequently destroyed.  File deactivation affects only reference letters. Transcripts and other academic records at the University will not be affected in any way by the RLS deactivation.

If you are unsure about the status of your file, you can check it. 

You can renew your reference letter file online by completing:

(1) The Reference File Registration Form, which is sent along with your reference letters each time you submit a request and may be updated anytime, and

(2) The RLS Policies Agreement, which verifies your understanding of and commitment to follow the policies and procedures of the RLS.

Upon the electronic submission of these forms with your payment, you will receive a confirmation message. Please report any errors promptly to the RLS by calling 734/764-7459 or sending an e-mail to rlservice@umich.edu.

Renew a reference letter file online. Please note: you will need a current UM uniqname login and password to access this online feature. If you have a UM uniqname login but have forgotten your password, please call 734/764-HELP (764-4357) for assistance. If you do not have a current UM uniqname (or you never had one), please call the ITCS Accounts Office at 734/764-8000.  You will also need a credit card for the online payment of the $25 fee.

Drop off or mail to the RLS office the Reference File Registration Form and the Reference Letter Service Policies Agreement.
