Application Statistics

Published medical school acceptance rates by institution can be misleading in that there are many factors to consider, including the total number of applicants from any given undergraduate institution and the screening process used by that institution in support of applicants. The University of Michigan does not have a pre-medical committee screening medical school applicants, and as such, any student who wishes to apply to medical school is free to do so. Historically, University of Michigan students have matriculated to medical schools at a rate well above the national average, but it is up to you to maximize your chances for admission through effort and hard work. Doing well in your coursework; taking a broad range of classes; showing interest in and dedication to medicine; doing volunteer and community service work; cultivating relationships with your teaching faculty who will eventually serve as your references; and completing applications in a timely fashion are all things you can do to promote your candidacy.

While it is certainly important to devote your energies toward getting into medical school, it is also wise to give some thought to what you will do if you do not get accepted. There are many options to consider, one of which may be to re-apply. If you choose this option, it is essential to find out the needed areas of improvement in your application, and to take steps to enhance your candidacy the second time. Consultations with medical school admissions personnel and pre-medical counselors in The Career Center can be very beneficial when trying to decide whether to re-apply and when, and what to do during an interim period between applications. Another option may be to consider a different career altogether and The Career Center offers many services to help you explore your options.
