Where to Apply to Law School

Deciding how many and which schools to apply can be a daunting process. Especially at a time when applications are on the rise and competition is getting stiffer, it would be advisable to research schools very thoroughly and to apply to a broad spectrum of institutions. Instead of passively and quickly resorting to any published ranking, it is advisable to conduct some sound self assessment and develop a list of the top “however-many” schools according to...You, based on criteria relevant to You. In developing your list of criteria, you may want to focus on some of the following categories:

  • Accreditation
  • School prestige/reputation
  • Selectivity
  • Student Body
  • Atmosphere
  • Size
  • Alumni base
  • Location
  • Law School Faculty
  • Strong department in area of interest
  • Academic and Support Programs
  • Extracurricular Programs
  • Facilities (library, classrooms, student housing)
  • Cost
  • Placement

There are a number of methods for gathering information about particular schools. Beyond the obvious school catalogs and school specific websites, you are encouraged to contact school admission and career services professionals directly to collect the information you need to make informed decisions. Efforts to connect with UM graduates attending a particular law school—and graduates in general from that school—should be made as well. When feasible, on-site visits to select schools can be invaluable.

Look for opportunities to connect with law school recruiters nationwide by attending one of the law schools forums. See a schedule.

Mark your calendar for the annual University of Michigan Law Day, sponsored by The Career Center. About one hundred law schools are expected to participate. See the Career Center Calendar of Events for details.
