Dean’s Certification Letters
Almost a third of the law schools will require a Dean’s letter,
that is a verification that the applicant is/was a student in good
standing at the institution that s/he is attending or graduated
from. UM students and alumni/ae should contact the academic offices
at their respective school or college for appropriate policies on
completing a Dean’s letter. For example, LSA students need to go
to 1255 Angell Hall to obtain a standard Dean’s Certification Form
that is accepted by most law schools. Forms may be picked up at
the 1255 Angell Hall front desk or downloaded
online.
Students must include stamped, addressed envelopes to the law schools
or, if the information must be sent to law schools as one complete
packet, envelopes can be addressed directly back to the student
to include with his or her application materials. Processing usually
takes about two weeks, but plan for up to four weeks for processing
during peak application times (October through February). Remember
that if you have the Dean’s Letter sent to you to include with your
other application materials it must remain unopened.
