Frequently Asked Questions
- Does Career Center work with all UM graduate students?
Yes, we encourage students from all academic departments to use
our services and resources. We work with masters students, as well
as with Ph.D. students who are pursuing jobs and options within
and beyond academe.
- What does The Career Center offer that is unique to
graduate students?
Because graduate students often have complex career situations,
we have developed a variety of resources to meet your needs. Our
graduate student team is available to meet with you individually
in career counseling appointments. Many of our programs and workshops,
often co-sponsored with schools, college, departments and student
groups, are designed specifically for graduate students. We have
developed a library of hard copy and computer resources to help
in your career decisions. And we continually strive to develop employment
opportunities specifically for graduate students.
All of these resources are offered in the context of a comprehensive
career services office. We invite you to explore all of the services
available to you as a University of Michigan student.
- Can I use the recruiting services at Career Center?
Absolutely! Employers generally recruit through our office in three
main ways: on-campus recruiting, job postings and our career events.
Take some time to understand how to use these resources to their
fullest advantage. Many employers work with us specifically to hire
graduate students. Others come with more general needs, and are
very interested in talking with students of all degree levels.
- Do employers come to campus specifically looking to
hire graduate students?
Increasingly we work with employers who understand the value of
a graduate education at Michigan, and who are looking specifically
to hire graduate students. Other employers may not have those explicit
needs, but will often be willing to work with you to explore opportunities
with a masters or Ph.D. degree. We encourage you to keep an open
mind as you explore your opportunities through Career Center.
- Should I use Career Center services, or should I go
through my school, college or department for career help?
The best advice is to avail yourself of as many resources as possible.
Many academic units on campus offer career help to their students.
Career Center works collaboratively with these units to provide
services and resources that will add value to students. In addition
to our standard programs and services, we are avilable to develop
tailored programs that can meet the needs of individual units.
