Tips for Recruiting Success

The key to successful recruiting is building and maintaining a presence on campus. Organizations who enjoy the most success are those who have name recognition and a positive image with students. In order to attain a higher level of campus presence, employers are encouraged to use an integrated approach involving a variety of activities. The list below provides proven strategies to assist as you seek to connect with students at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
  • To maximize your organization’s visibility, consider attending campus Job Fairs sponsored by our office. This is a great way to promote your organization, employment opportunities, and begin screening candidates in one day. Each event attracts hundreds of students from a variety of academic majors and degree levels. You may even consider increasing your visibility through event sponsorship.
  • Interview students on campus for projected openings via our on-line recruitment system, Career Center Connector, powered by Symplicity. Collect resumes from interested students and spend a day interviewing candidates in our office. Stay connected with candidates using convenient e-mail functions housed within the system. Post immediate openings to connect with interested UM students, new graduates and alumni/ae subscribers.
  • Highlight your organization and employment opportunities by hosting a presentation on campus. We can assist in arranging facilities and advertising your event to interested students.
  • Provide students with learning opportunities while exposing them to your organization by offering internship opportunities. Test out potential hires before graduation and enhance your staffing resources. Enjoy the added benefit of having an ambassador on campus following the experience.
  • Volunteer to participate in a Career Center program. Topics include resume writing, interviewing, career profiling and job search techniques. Share your experience with students interested in learning more about your industry while enjoying exposure to a wide variety of academic disciplines and class levels. This is an ideal opportunity for your UM alumni/ae to return to campus and connect with current students. Contact a member of our employer relations team for details.
  • Advertise your campus activity. For maximum exposure, consider placing a display ad in the student newspaper, The Michigan Daily. The Career Center can also assist in relaying targeted e-mail messages to students via our on-line recruiting system and by connecting with relevant academic departments and student organizations.
  • Tap the rich diversity found on our campus. Options to consider include participation in our Multicultural Career Fair, event sponsorship, and outreach to student organizations.
  • Ensure a broad candidate pool by including all majors, degree levels and work authorizations as you recruit. Enhance your staff by attracting and actively recruiting UM graduate students.
  • Generous contributions from employer partnerships have enabled The Career Center to expand services and resources to better serve students and employers. As a result of their highly visible contributions, employers have enjoyed a competitive advantage through enhanced publicity, access to students and the opportunity to work directly with staff.
